How Do We Shine the Light of Christ in a Fallen World?

obeying jesus Jan 08, 2024

The Scripture tells us that, as followers of Jesus, we are the light of the world. This reveals our identity, signifying that we are agents of Christ, illuminating His love for a fallen world.

In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus communicates this truth, saying, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

To understand our role, we must acknowledge that Jesus is the source of our light. He is the Light. In a world overshadowed by darkness, Jesus brought hope, demonstrating perfect righteousness and love.

Drawing on John 1:4-5, we encounter the powerful statement, "In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." This verse captures the identity of Jesus as the Light and how humanity's hope is anchored in Him. Nonetheless, some still struggle to understand and accept Him, therefore remaining in their sins. But those who embrace Him go from darkness to light and become bearers of His illuminating light.

Jesus, as the Light, illuminates the path for us on how we should live in a way that pleases God. As recipients of His light, we should allow it to shine through us by following His example of sacrificial love.

Know Your New Identity in Christ

In Jesus' teachings, He tells His followers, "You are the light of the world." This statement reflects our fundamental identity in Christ and is a natural part of who we are. Our light comes from Christ, the ultimate source of love.

As bearers of divine light, we are empowered to embrace a higher calling — to illuminate the light of Jesus in our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and wherever life takes us. We achieve this by sharing the love we receive from Christ with those around us.

Jesus encourages us not to conceal our light. Just as a lighted lamp is meant to be placed on a lampstand and not under a basket, we should allow others to experience His love. And, just as a city set on a hill cannot be hidden, we cannot hide our identity as the light of Christ. The light of Christ within us is designed to shine. As recipients of His love, we are called to extend that love to others as well. Simply put, “we love, because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19.

Understanding and embracing our identity as the light of the world should propel us to shine brightly in a world frequently shrouded in darkness. By allowing our light to shine, we fulfill our purpose, illuminating the path for others and glorifying our Father in heaven. As we follow in the footsteps of Jesus, our lives radiate the love and grace that dwell within us, becoming true beacons of hope in a world that so desperately needs it.

Share the Light of Christ through the Gospel

To radiate the light of Christ, we can start by sharing the Gospel message. This involves effectively conveying the truth in God's Word to dispel darkness from the hearts of sinful humanity. Sharing the Gospel is proclaiming the love of Jesus to everyone.

The Gospel message, often referred to as the "good news," is the central message of Christianity. It revolves around the person and work of Jesus Christ. Because we all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory (Romans 3:23), we experienced separation from God or spiritual death, which is the consequence of sin. This is what the Bible emphasizes when it says that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). In His mercy and love, God provided a solution. He sent Jesus Christ, His Son, into the world to reconcile people to Himself. Jesus, fully God and fully human, lived a sinless life.

The heart of the Gospel is the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross. Jesus bore the punishment for human sin, offering Himself as the atoning sacrifice. His death satisfies the demands of God’s justice, therefore declaring those who put their faith in Him as justified.

The Gospel doesn't end with Jesus' death; it climaxes with His resurrection. Jesus conquered sin and death, demonstrating God's power and securing victory over the forces of darkness. Because Jesus is resurrected to eternal life, those who believe in Him will also experience the same resurrection if they die.

The Gospel message declares that salvation is a gift from God. It is not earned through good works but received by faith in Jesus Christ. This emphasizes God's grace, as expressed in Ephesians 2:8-9. Responding to the Gospel involves believing in Jesus.

The Gospel brings about a transformation in the believer's life. Through faith in Jesus, individuals experience a new birth, receive the Holy Spirit, and embark on a journey of spiritual growth and sanctification.

We should actively seek unique opportunities to share the Gospel, wherever we are. The Gospel serves as an effective medium in spreading the light of Christ, fostering a transformative influence in the lives of those touched by its brilliance.

Share the Light of Christ by Living Out the Gospel

The Gospel isn't just to be shared by Jesus’ followers but should be lived out as well. This echoes the teachings found in the book of James, emphasizing that faith is not merely to be kept but walked upon. In chapter 2, verse 26, we read “For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” Living out the Gospel entails making the truth of God's Word visible through our actions.

Demonstrating God's character through our actions is a key aspect in illuminating the light of Christ to others. This involves actively showing mercy, extending kindness to the least, and expressing love for Christ in every act. It requires the extension of grace to those who may seem undeserving, following the command to "love your enemies" and "do good" even when reciprocity is not guaranteed. Living out the Gospel also means embracing forgiveness.

We should glorify God by manifesting His character. Glorifying God involves aligning our actions with His character. We should reflect His love, mercy, forgiveness, and grace as manifestations of His glory in our lives. These good works are ways to glorify God and reflect the light of Christ to others.

As Christians, we can make a difference by shining the light of Christ in every circumstance. We should reflect Christ's love, even in the face of adversity. It requires resilience and commitment. We have the responsibility to shine the light of Christ wherever we are.

Christians not only proclaim the light of Christ through words but also embody it through intentional living. By sharing the Gospel and living out its message, we become beacons of hope in a world yearning for light. This charge extends to every child of God who plays a vital role as a carrier of Jesus’ light.
